All Year round Cultural Centre
Ekomé Lodge is now open all year round and operates as a cultural centre for travelers, musicians, backpackers and anyone who wants a taste of traditional Ghana. Single, double and triple rooms are available at reasonable daily or weekly rates. We can provide catered for accommodation or you may want to prepare your own meals out of our kitchen or eat on the street. All our wonderful drum and dance teachers live in the same village and are ready to offer group or private classes. Whether you are looking for a place to rest on route to your next African destination, or are keen to immerse yourself in a drum /dance intensive, we know you'll enjoy your stay at Ekomé Lodge.
Community Project
With some help from 2009 tour members, Jarren (manpower and funds) and Holly, Ekomé has cleared a huge neighbouring block of rubbish and debris, excavated and compacted the land and created a football and playing pitch for the kids (and adults) in the community. We have negotiated over the past month with the Presbyterian Church who own this block (for use as a future cemetery) and after several meetings and a formal written submission they are supporting and are proud of our project.
This is Stage One of what will become an education program for Nungua; targeting sanitation, pollution and rubbish issues. This project gives everyone a chance to see the benefits that can occur when we keep our environment clean. We have entrusted several of Ekome's teachers with an Environmental Monitoring Role during the year when Tuza and I are not there.
Next year, Stage Two will focus on taking a Education Package to all the local schools and churches and talking directly to teachers, students and ministers about how they can better serve the local environment.
Ekomé welcomes any suggestions from past or present visitors or hands-on support from anyone coming in 2011.
It's amazing how many locals have already commented that we are really helping. By setting some small examples and by educating we believe we can make a big difference to the way the Nungua community looks at its responsibility to the environment.
